The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2026-27 academic year is now available and open for applications. The application can be found at studentaid.gov. The deadline for submitting the FAFSA for the 2026-27 school year is June 30, 2027.

  • New Form: The 2026-27 FAFSA form is shorter and easier to complete, with fewer questions than previous versions.
  • Automated Tax Data Transfer: The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is now required to provide tax information.
  • Student Aid Index (SAI): The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) has been replaced by the SAI to determine financial aid eligibility.
  • Expanded Eligibility: The new FAFSA form expands eligibility for federal student aid, including Pell Grants.
  • No Critical Bugs: Beta testing for the 2026-27 FAFSA found no critical bugs.
  • Fewer Questions: The new form has fewer questions (36) than previous versions (108).
  • Streamlined User Experience: The new FAFSA form is designed to be easier to navigate and complete.
  • Who’s My FAFSA Parent?: An online tool helps dependent students identify which parent(s) are required contributors.
  • FAFSA Submission Summary: The new FAFSA Submission Summary replaces the Student Aid Report.
When can students complete a 2026-2027 FAFSA?

It is of utmost importance for both prospective and returning students and their families to place a high priority on promptly completing the 2026-27 FAFSA.

The 2026-2027 Financial Aid Award Year runs from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. If your term’s start date falls within these dates and you would like to be considered for federal student aid and/or state grants, you must complete a 2026-2027 FAFSA.

When Can Students Expect their Financial Aid Offer Letters?

Awards for new students will begin approximately 5-7 business days after 2026-2027 FAFSAs are completed with FMU’s federal school code of 001486 and imported into FMU’s systems. The sooner the completion of the 2026-2027 FAFSA, the better.
