Florida Memorial University President William C. McCormick, Jr. Throws First Pitch at Miami Marlins Game in Full-Circle Moment
MIAMI GARDENS, FL. — Florida Memorial University (FMU) President William C. McCormick, Jr. returned to the pitcher’s mound at Loan Depot, for a special full-circle moment, throwing the ceremonial first pitch before the Miami Marlins game against the Atlanta Braves.
For President McCormick, the moment carried special significance. Twenty-six years earlier, in 2000, he also had the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a Marlins game. Returning to the mound more than two decades later this time as president of Florida Memorial University, created a powerful connection between his personal journey, his commitment to South Florida, and his Alma mater.
“What made this moment especially meaningful was knowing that I had stood on the Marlins mound and thrown the first pitch back in 2000,” said President McCormick. “To have the opportunity to do it again 26 years later, now as president of Florida Memorial University, was truly a full-circle moment. It reminded me of how much life can change, how opportunities evolve, and how important it is to remain connected to the communities we are privileged to serve.”
The ceremonial first pitch brought together South Florida pride, community, and leadership as President McCormick represented Florida Memorial University before Marlins fans with faculty, staff, students, and alumni in attendance.
The occasion also highlighted the enduring connection between Florida Memorial University and the broader South Florida community. As president, McCormick continues to advance the University’s commitment to student success, community engagement, institutional growth, and strengthening FMU’s role as an important educational and cultural institution in South Florida.
“Coming back 26 years later was not simply about throwing a baseball,” President McCormick added. “It was about reflection, gratitude, and recognizing the journey. Florida Memorial University has a remarkable legacy, and I am honored to have the opportunity to help lead the institution forward while remaining deeply connected to the community that has supported it for generations.”
The moment also served as a celebration of the visibility and impact of Florida Memorial University throughout South Florida. As the Hometown HBCU, FMU continues to build relationships and partnerships that create opportunities for its students and strengthen its connection to the communities it serves.
From a first pitch in 2000 to another first pitch in 2026, President McCormick’s return to the mound offered a memorable reminder that some moments come full circle and that the journey between them matters.
