Assistant Vice President of Student Life

The Assistant Vice President of Student Life provides central leadership and guidance of services for students. We provide resources to help students transition into college life and to support growth during your college years at Florida Memorial University.

The AVP of Student Life is an important contact point when a student’s need is apparent, and it is not clear where to turn for help. Student Affairs coordinates specific programming and initiatives that promote self-awareness, personal growth, leadership, and integrity within the Florida Memorial University community.  This office also oversees matters related to student behavior through Student Conduct and compliance with the Code of Conduct. The AVP of Student Life also provides services to assist students with medical and personal emergencies.

HOSPITALIZATIONS AND EMERGENCIES

In case of a student hospitalization or emergency, a parent or designated emergency may will be contacted by the University. During this phone call information might be limited. However, the staff member will provide a general account of the incident, the hospital where the student was taken, and the contact information for the hospital. Our staff will remain in contact with you to gather details and coordinate university resources as necessary.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION

Each student is required to register emergency contact information with the university. As parents and family members, you are unable to access or update this information. Therefore, we ask that you work with your student to ensure the information provided is accurate.

Student Wellbeing

The Assistant Vice President of Student Life should be contacted when your student does not sound like themselves. This can include, but is not limited to, times of extreme stress, academic trouble, family issues that affect the student’s ability to concentrate on his/her academic endeavors and health problems and emergencies. We work diligently to protect student privacy so some information may not be readily available.

Parents/guardians of students under the age of 21 may be notified when a student is found responsible for violating a FMU Zero-Tolerance Policy or if any of the following occur:

  • Students endanger themselves or other students while under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Specific instances include DUI, fighting, alcohol poisoning, and hospitalization.
  • When the University determines that any future violations of the school’s policy will most likely result in suspension from Florida Memorial University.
  • When a hearing officer determines that any future violations of the University’s policy will likely result in removal from housing.

You can contact the Office of Student Life from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students and/or their families may notify the office by calling the University Main Line at 305- 626-3600 and ask for the Office of Student Affairs or email studentaffairs@fmu.edu. For urgent issues after hours, residential students please contact the Residence Life Coordinator on duty at 786-385-3932; commuter students should contact the Campus Safety Department at 305-626-3771.
